Who Can Submit to Ink & Image?
Ink & Image only accepts submissions from current undergraduates and recent graduates at New York University. Works by NYU alumni are accepted, but must have been completed during the author’s time as an undergraduate at NYU.
Submitted works may be written by authors from any school within NYU (CAS, Tisch, Gallatin, etc.).
Ink & Image accepts three types of submissions:
Full-Length Academic Papers
Draft page count (what you submit to us): 10-30 pages
Final Page Count: 10-20 pages
Description: Traditional academic papers. Papers must demonstrate a clear argument, critical analysis, and engagement with scholarly sources.
Papers should be formatted in Chicago Style.
2. Notes (Short Form Academic Papers)
Draft page count (what you submit to us): 3-8 pages
Final Page Count: 5-6 pages

Papers should be formatted in Chicago Style.
3. Long-Form Reviews and Non-Traditional Works

This category includes but is not limited to:
Exhibition design proposals
Architectural designs and accompanying texts
Photo essays (Photography portfolios without texts will not be accepted)
Poems and visual poems
Reviews including gallery and exhibition reviews
Digital research projects
All submissions should:
creatively explore art, architecture, and/or design.
demonstrate a clear argument and critical analysis.
be well-researched and engage with scholarly ideas.
How will submissions be reviewed?
Submitted papers are distributed anonymously among members of the editorial board for review and are evaluated by the Editorial Board for originality, approach, research, and alignment with the journal’s focus areas.
Following acceptance into the journal, all pieces will undergo three rounds of edits.
Each author will be assigned an editor from the journal’s Editorial Board, who they will work with to edit, revise, and strengthen their work, ultimately preparing it for publication at the end of the spring semester. Grammar and quality of writing are important but they will be improved upon by the journal's editors, following acceptance into the journal. Pieces will also be reviewed by the journal’s Faculty Advisor.
Don’t let the selection process intimidate you!
All submissions — regardless of their state of completion — are workshopped and edited throughout the semester. This approach emphasizes flexibility and growth, allowing for editorial improvements during the review process. Ink & Image is committed to supporting the development of your work, focusing on the originality and potential of your ideas.
